No Surprise: PlayStation 3 Gets A Price Cut, New Model

In a move that surprised nobody who's paying attention for the last few days, Sony has announced that the PlayStation 3 is getting a mighty big price cut down to $499.

The company had previously denied all the rumors and reports, but their denial included the wonderful phrase "at this time". But now is the time, and the 60GB model now costs the same as the 20GB model did. Whoever said the phrase "He who hesitates is lost," must not have been a gamer.

In addition to the sub $500 PS3, Sony also announced a new 80GB version of the console as well. Korea got to see this version first, with their 80GB model coming out last month. The new, heftier, console will run $599 and will include the online-enabled racer Motorstorm. Look for it stores starting in August.

Sounds much better.. but probably no UK release with that kinda price for about 4 years. $500 is ?250, and currently the UK price for a PS3 is about ?400 still, so i doubt we will se much a drop here yet.

SCEE president David Reeves has told GamesIndustry.biz that the 60GB PlayStation 3 will no longer be available in the US after stock sells out - which he predicts will occur by the end of the month.

Reeves was speaking at an E3 event to announce the introduction of a new PS3 bundle in Europe. When asked about possible criticisms over whether SCEE should have given consumers the option to pay a lower price, as SCEA has done, he replied, "Well, they're not really are they, because what the US are offering from the 1st of August is a USD 599 version with one game.

"All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July."

When asked to clarify if this will mean the end of the 60GB model, Reeves answered, "In America, yes."

SCEA announced a USD 100 price cut for PlayStation 3 earlier this week. A new 80GB model will come bundled with a copy of Motorstorm and will retail for USD 599.

Its well worth it as a piece of home cinema equipment - If you look at it as a games console yh it looks expensive but then if you look at it as a home cinema/blu-ray player the value is excellent (standalone blu-ray player are still topping ?1000)

Actually you can get blu-ray players for as little as ?400 now and you can get a blu-ray writer drive for pc for as little as ?500.

So you could relaly just have an extremely powerful pc and a blu-ray drive, use windows media center on vista, watch blu-ray movies etc through it, play games using xbox360 wireless controllers and use the internet etc too.

Plus a pc has the upgrade ability that a gaming console doesnt. So 3-5 years down the road and its PS4 or become a retro gamer

500 USD is 361.700 EUR
