How to install a new HDD on the PS3

This is joint written by me and basarili we both have 160gb HDDs installed on our ps3s.

Installing HDD read everything carefully

Things we need:
-PS3
-A solid place to work
-Mini head screwdriver
-HDD 2.5Inch SATA 5400RPM GB??(Doesnt matter up to you)
*Note* Not every HDD could work.

Explanations:
-2,5Inch? You also have a 3.5 one but thats for PCs and not for laptops. Laptop has a different inch and thats the 2.5 one because its smaller so you need a 2.5inch one.
-SATA? is a computer bus technology primarily designed for transfer of data to and from hard disks and optical drives. Dont buy a HDD wich isnt SATA
-5400RPM? Thats the revolutions per minute you can also buy one with a higher RPM ,BUT your PS3 could get a sickness like instead of working faster going slower and it could generate more heat. (HDD built in the PS3 uses a 5400RPM so dont buy an other RPM)
-Intern&Extern PS3 uses a Intern one wich means it has to be built inside the PS3. Extern means outside a extern HDD is a USB plug and play you will have to plug the USB into your PS3 ,but were not talking about a extern HDD now we want a Intern one.

Lets install it now
*Note all saves, dowloads and folding will be lost as for the rest they will remain*

-Lets start with closing the PS3 press on the button in front of the PS3 to make the lights red. Now shut the MAIN POWER wich is on the back of the PS3 and take out all the cables and other things from the PS3.

-Take of the Expansion Bay dont give too much power just try to remove it slowly.
Now use your mini screwdriver to remove the Blue screw. Then flip up the metal handle that is on the front of the caddy and try to get it to your right first then you will see the HDD will be free to move then take it to yourself to take it out.

-Take the screws off and put your own bought HDD into the tray now screw them back to their place.

-Put the HDD back into the PS3 you have to move it to the left to get it connected you will feel when it is connected when you feel it put the Blue screw back on his place and finally you can close the Expansion Bay.

-Put all the cables and everything back when you start your PS3 it will ask you to format you have to say yes and then it asks it again say yes again. After a few minutes your ready.
Now your PS3 will ask you to reboot reboot your system and volia we have finally our new HDD installed in our PS3.
-To check it out go to Settings-->System Settings-->System Information you will see how much space you have dont get scared if it is a bit lower than you have expected its because the PS3 uses some of the space now to run. The spcae amount it uses can be between the 10 and 20GB.

Now were clear to enjoy from our new HDD


NOTE: YOU CAN BACK UP ALL YOUR DATA ONTO AN EXTERNAL HDD AND THEN RESTORE IT ONTO YOUR NEW ONE SO YOU CAN KEEP YOUR SAVES.

I have read that if you want to load your PS3 games faster you can save large amout of the gamefiles on your harddrive, otherwise I cant see any need of a big disk.
Tell me, as 360 owner, can you transfer files to PS3 and watch them, and is it possible to install maby Windows XP on it and use it as an computer? Linux have I read that it will work but on what scale I dont know.

Now lets see if the 360 community have tryed to change the Harddrive on the Microsoft console yet... Nope!

Yeh you can do that

the main reason I do it is so I can use it as a media hub - movies, music, photos etc.

You can install linux, not windows xp yet.
