i'm having the EXACT same problem. i made sure there was no dust. tried the other usb port, tried another sync cable (from my old stolen zune
). it connected the first time when i re-installed the zune software but while it was synching it stopped suddenly saying it was done 7 songs into my 20 gigs... thats when i discovered it wasnt really connecting. if you resolved this id like to know what the issue is. |

Finally a FIX
This took some time and research but I finally got my Zune working with my computer. I have an 80GB Gen2 that I had specially ordered from Zune's custom shop. I was not about to give up on a solution so easily.
My Zune was working fine for about 3 months until a couple days ago when I connected it to my work computer, where it sits M-F while working. I got this annoying sound and warning message saying that the USB Device Not Recognized. I did all the trips and jumped through all the loops that I found on these search engines and on the Microsoft website. I connected to another port, did a reset, blah blah blah. I was not about to reinstall my operating system, XP pro SP2. And that nonsense about it having to be an issue because it's not a USB 2.0 port wasn't going to fly. I also wasn't going to spend more money on a new cable. The fix isn't easy and it isn't going to be a couple of clicks and your done. I will try to give as much detail as possible but you might have to do some searching on the web if you don't understand how to do something. Also, keep in mind that with windows, there are multiple ways of doing things. The FIX: While the Zune was connected to my computer, I went to the Device Manager; Right Clicked on My Computer, select Manage, click on Device Manager. I looked for the USB that had the yellow "!" then I uninstalled the Driver. Once that was un-installed, I disconnected the Zune before Windows had a chance to detect it again. Next I went to the Control Panel and double clicked on Add Hardware. I reconnected the Zune and as I went through the steps of adding the new hardware. I directed the wizard to the location of the correct driver. In my computer, a typical setup: "C:\Program Files\Zune\Drivers\Zune". (Sorry I don't remember the step by step but this is pretty close.) Once I finished with the install I had to reboot my computer. I did this with the zune still connected. When the computer restarted it did discover the new device that was connected was the Zune. I then disconnected the Zune and restarted the computer. Once the second restart was complete, I connected the Zune and the Zune program started right up. Hopefully this will be of some help. Good Luck |

Spoke too soon. This only worked for a little while.
Since I was able to get it to work for a little while, that tells me that the issue isn't hardware. It has to be a driver or software problem. I will continue to work on it and I will post when I figure it out. |
