Zune 4/8GB Converting h.264 files? - 11-27-2007, 09:22 AM

Is anyone else noticing that rather than just syncing .wmv or .mp4 (h.264) files the software is converting them before syncing them? Is this just me or am I doing something wrong? It doesn't do this for the podcasts mind you just videos I try and sync with the Zune.

To me it doesn't makes sense since these video formats are supports. Any ideas?

H.264 is not compatable with 4/8gb versions. Maybe your wmv files have a too higher FPS or Too higher resolution and need converting down?

The file size of my wmv file is about 330mb at 320x240 and i *believe* 29.97fps. Also on the zune site it clearly lists h.264 as a compatible format, so thats a bit odd to hear it isn't supported.

From Zune.net (under 4/8gb product page)
"Zune will import unprotected .WMV, .MPG4 and H.264 files into your video library."

Anyone know what the restrictions are on wmv or h.264 files?

Basically, importing them into your library meens you can add them to the Zune Software on the PC. Adding them to your Zune is a different story. H.264 may actually be available.. but it seems to think it wants to convert it.. strange.

From zune.net

Quote:
H.264 video[4] ? Baseline Profile up to 2.5 Mbps peak video bit rate; 720 pixels x 480 pixels up to 30 frames per second (or 720 pixels x 576 pixels up to 25 frames per second). Zune software will transcode HD H.264 files at device sync
As long as your file falls within these parameters then it shouldn't convert.

I've had trouble with my zune trying to convert a video podcast, haven't messed with it a ton yet, but it's a bit annoying.

riprat can you tell me exactly where you found that on zune.net, and if that information is available for other file formats as well. I want to know if I can get videos to sync to zune immediately rather than converting.
